A fixed-term employment contract in Ireland employs someone for a set period or until a specific task or event is completed. Fixed-term contracts must be handled carefully, particularly on renewal, where objective grounds for the fixed term need to be set out. This template is a fixed-term contract for your role covering duration, objective grounds, duties, pay, hours, leave, notice and the statutory core terms.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a fixed-term employment contract cost in Ireland?
The price of this self-complete template is shown at the top of this page. You pay once and there are no further charges from us. The price covers the template and guidance notes only — it does not include legal advice or review by a solicitor.
Can a fixed-term contract be renewed in Ireland?
Yes, but renewals need care. When renewing, the employer must set out in writing the objective grounds for renewing on a fixed-term basis, and successive contracts can in some circumstances give the employee a right to a contract of indefinite duration.
Do fixed-term employees have the same rights as permanent staff?
Fixed-term employees generally must not be treated less favourably than comparable permanent employees, unless there are objective grounds. The contract should be drafted with this in mind.
