A letter of wishes in Ireland is an informal document that sits alongside your Will and explains your personal wishes to your executors and family. This is a digital, self-complete Letter of Wishes template, completed online. It is for people who have made, or are making, a Will and want to leave guidance on matters such as personal belongings, funeral preferences or the reasons behind their choices. No solicitor reviews your answers or the finished document at this price.

A letter of wishes is not a substitute for a Will. It is generally not legally binding, so anything that must take effect legally should be dealt with in the Will itself. Keep the letter with your Will and tell your executors where to find it, and review it when your circumstances change.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a letter of wishes cost in Ireland?

This page is a free guide — nothing on it is for sale. Solicitors set their own fees for this work and must give you a written costs estimate (a section 150 letter) before starting. Get quotes through the Law Society of Ireland’s Find a Solicitor directory.

Is a letter of wishes legally binding in Ireland?

Generally, no. A letter of wishes guides your executors and family, but it does not replace your Will. Anything that must be legally effective, such as who inherits your property, should be set out in your Will.

Do I need a Will as well as a letter of wishes?

Yes. A letter of wishes is designed to sit alongside a valid Will. If you do not yet have a Will, you should put one in place so that your estate is dealt with as you intend.

For more on making a Will and administering an estate, see our Wills & Probate in Ireland guide.
