If you are trading under a name that is different from your own legal name (for sole traders) or your company’s registered name (for limited companies), you are legally required to register that business name with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). This applies to sole traders, partnerships, and companies alike.

What Is a Business Name?

A business name (also called a trading name) is simply the name under which you conduct business. For example, if John Murphy trades as “Murphy’s Plumbing Services”, then “Murphy’s Plumbing Services” is the business name that must be registered. Similarly, if ABC Limited trades as “QuickFix Solutions”, that trading name needs to be registered.

How to Register a Business Name

Registration is done through the CRO by filing Form RBN1 (for individuals and partnerships) or Form RBN1B (for bodies corporate). The registration fee is €40 for online filings. You will need to provide the business name, the nature of the business, the address where the business is carried on, and details of the owner(s).

It is important to understand that registering a business name does not create a separate legal entity. A sole trader with a registered business name is still personally liable for business debts.
